Project Cultural Symbiosis is a three-dimensional solid light installation that showcases how cultures fuse with both friction and grace

The term ‘cultural’ was chosen to connect the word ‘symbiosis’ to the true meaning of this project, illustrating the complexities of different cultures merging and supporting each other.

‘Symbiosis’ was chosen based on its definition - “interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.” This term perfectly captures the essence of fusion, as it requires at least two organisms working together. It also encompasses the interaction and natural elements, connecting to water.

The installation becomes more dynamic with increased foot traffic. As more droplets form and fuse, they create beautiful, complex shapes, symbolising the merging of cultures. The droplets also pop after floating for 3 metres, representing the friction that accompanies grace. This installation serves as a visual abstraction of cultures fusing, illustrating how community and collaboration make the cultural web even more intricate. I chose the visual component of water droplets due to Kohler’s connection with water and its universal significance as a connector; it represents our symbiosis.

Although this isn't a future bathroom it is showing Kohler to the world as a future thinking high tech sustainable company who cares about the wellbeing of their customers. The Context of this Installation would be for the KBIS in Las Vegas, where it would be placed in high traffic foot areas in between stalls, but it could be placed anywhere with high foot traffic.

The installation will be crafted from white ceramic, made from pottery moulds and fired piece by piece. The panels will be placed inside, with LEDs installed on the ceiling. The power and electronics will be embedded within the ceramic walls and the floor insert.
